A security camera that cannot see clearly is not doing its job, and in Arizona, sun angle and glare are the most common reason a camera fails at exactly the moment it matters.

Why does Arizona sun cause so many camera problems?

Direct, low-angle sun, especially in the morning and late afternoon, is intense enough here to wash out a camera's image almost completely if the lens is pointed anywhere near it. A camera aimed generally east or west catches direct sun at the edges of the day, which is also, not coincidentally, when a lot of package theft and driveway activity happens. Reflective surfaces make it worse: light-colored stucco, pool water, and glass all bounce hard sun back at a camera from directions you might not expect, creating glare and blown-out highlights even when the camera is not pointed straight at the sun.

Where does this go wrong most often?

The most common mistake is choosing camera positions based on where mounting is convenient, an eave, a garage corner, rather than what the camera will actually be looking into at different times of day. A camera mounted to cover a driveway that also happens to face west catches brutal glare every single afternoon, right when someone is arriving home. What actually fixes it?

Aiming matters more than equipment quality here. Where a spot truly cannot avoid direct sun at some point in the day, we choose cameras with better dynamic range specifically for that position, so the image compensates for bright and shadowed areas in the same frame instead of blowing out one or the other.

What about night coverage?

Night brings a different problem: infrared cameras can wash out anything close and reflective, like light-colored stucco or a white garage door right behind the subject, the same way sun does during the day. Full-color night vision cameras, which use ambient and supplemental light instead of infrared, perform better in areas with some existing light, like a porch or driveway with landscape lighting, and we choose between infrared and full-color camera types based on what a specific position will actually see at night, not by default.

Does heat affect camera equipment too?

Yes. Exterior cameras mounted on a south or west-facing wall in direct summer sun run hotter than ones in shade, which shortens equipment life over time. We favor equipment rated for genuine outdoor exposure and, where possible, mounting positions with some natural shade from an eave or overhang, without compromising the actual coverage the camera is there to provide.
